Bucky Barnes
07 December 2014 @ 01:28 pm

[There's a serious furrow to Bucky's brow when he addresses the Barge, making him look almost too old for twelve. He still looks young, but there's something world weary and mature that makes it clear he's not messing around and expects to be taken seriously.

(Which is kind of a joke, because he's just a poor kid with no parents from Brooklyn and he doesn't expect anyone to take him seriously at all, but he has to try, because something important's riding on these guys listening to him.)]

Who're the doctors on board? I need to talk to one of them. Or a couple of 'em, just so we're clear on some stuff. [He doesn't want to outright announce "my friend has asthma" to anyone, especially the other kids, because that's enough to get people looking at Steve like he's diseased sometimes, or basically paint a target of "I'm easy to pick on" on his back.]

I also need gloves, a hat, scarf and jacket for my friend. [Which feels almost like too much to ask again, that they can just assume they can get free stuff, and Bucky doesn't, really. But he has to ask, because not having warm clothes is going to be a problem, and not just for them.] Most of the other kids need 'em, too. None of these clothes fit us, and it's cold on deck.

[Note that he doesn't ask for himself, because if there's a shortage or there's some problem with getting winter clothes, he can do without. He's not even really thinking he needs them, because he's got this weird looking sweater and a heavy looking blue jacket that won't fit, but it'll do. He can make it work.

There's a pause, his mouth pinched into a thin, uncomfortable line. He's not especially worried about what's going on, but he doesn't want things to get worse if he can take steps to prevent it.]

Thanks.

[Spam for the Flood]

[It goes without saying that most of Bucky's time during the flood is spent following Steve around, trying to make sure he doesn't get into trouble, or being ready to bail him out of any trouble he does find, and just enjoying hanging out with your best friend, because that's first and foremost why he's glad his buddy's here. They're the only family either one of them's got anymore, and if they're gonna be stuck somewhere way far out of Brooklyn, hell yeah, he wants to be together.

But he does stuff on his own, too. Snow's not as novel an adventure for him as it is for some of the other people here - they see plenty of it in New York - but he still hangs out on deck, helping younger kids build snowmen and enthusiastically participating in any snowball fights that happen, although he'll also punch the hell out of anyone who tries turning it from a game to something meaner.

His appetite isn't quite as aggressive or vaguely alarming as his older self's is, but he still helps himself to large stacks of pancakes in the dining hall, which he enthusiastically covers in syrup and whatever other topping are available. He hoards oranges, too, and sneaks some out with him to give to Steve, or other kids who look like they're hungry or homesick. At twelve, Bucky's attention is primarily focused on keeping Steve alive and as healthy as possible, but he's still a protector by nature and he knows what it's like to miss your parents and be a little scared of what the future has in store for you, so he does his best to help anyone who looks like they're having a hard time, dragging out board games he's never heard of in the common rooms and giving the younger kids piggy back rides.

(He misses his sister, so it's kinda nice to play with some of the younger kids.)

Nearing the end of the flood, he starts looking more serious and less like he's enjoying his vacation away from the orphanage, because Steve's sick again, and that always puts him on edge. He hovers around the infirmary when Steve gets checked out by the doctors and begs some soup off people in the dining hall (it's still hard to believe they can just get soup for free, and fruit and candy) before doing the same thing with art supplies from the art room.

And probably unsuccessfully tries to convince Steve to stay inside where it's warm and take it easy, which means he's back to trailing him around hoping his idiot best friend doesn't just fall over dead.]

[Bucky didn't really mind that flood one way or the other. There were worse things than being six years old again, and while getting some insight into Natasha's childhood was kind of horrific, he hadn't been one of the people she'd stabbed in the thigh so. Again, there were worse things.

He's out on deck, and since it's gotten colder, he's got his Howling Commandos jacket on instead of just his regular service uniform.]

So, New York's not exactly an easy place to grow up when you're a kid and you don't have any parents, and, you know, kids can be assholes. There were these kids who used to wait in an alley over near Tenth Avenue to jump kids and make 'em pay a toll to pass back and forth across the street. This one day, when I was about six, I was walking back to the orphanage and heard these kids picking on this scrawny blonde kid who apparently didn't wanna pay the toll. They were really trying to beat the crap outta him, but for some reason, he wasn't just running away or handing over the cash, and I'm thinking what the hell is wrong with this guy? When I say he was scrawny, I mean it looked like the wind could snap him in half, let alone some bully with a decent right hook. But he was still mouthing off at them and trying to land a decent hit, when any sane person woulda been high tailing it down the street.

But I'd seen these kids doing this routine for weeks, right? And I figured you know, if this kid can stand up to them, why the hell couldn't I? Takes guts not to run away from a fight. So I jumped in and helped him out, [And he grins sort of self deprecatingly, because this is sort of filling his feelings quota for the month and it's not exactly hard to figure out who he's talking about considering 1. the flood and 2. it's not as if it's a totally unknown story.] and the rest, as they say, is history.

[Private to Banner]

Thanks for looking out for me and Steve. You another one of his Avenger pals?

[Private to Peggy]

Is it really too much for you to call me Bucky even when you're a ten year old, Agent Carter?

[He is entirely just teasing you but lmfao. Really Peggy.]

[Private to Natasha]

[Ahaha what even to say to you Natasha. :c I mean it is extremely unsurprising that your childhood was awful - happy people don't become spies - but just. Holy shit. :c]

... I know being social's probably the last thing on your mind right now, but if you need anything, let me know.

[Spam for Ben]

[A while after Bucky made his post, he realized his item wasn't registering Ben anymore, which was, frankly, all kinds of concerning, because he really had come to care about the guy, even if he was nuts, and so he hurried down to his (former?) inmate's room to see what the hell was going on. The door was still the same, which was at least quasi reassuring, but that still didn't explain what had happened, so he banged on the door a few times, not bothering to filter the concern out of his voice.]

Ben? You in there?

[Forward dated Spam for Natasha]

[Bucky wasn't an idiot, he knew Natasha would need space after what had happened and considering the way she'd acted the last time they'd come back from being different people, he was pretty sure he wasn't high on her list of people she wanted to see. Admittedly, this was a little different than coming back from being married, but still. He'd kept his space.

But she still wasn't out and about, wasn't on the network and he hadn't heard from anyone else if they'd actually caught up and talked with her, yet, and he couldn't help it. He was concerned. So, not really expecting anything to actually come of this, because whatever their relationship was here - they weren't really friends, weren't really coworkers, but acquaintances seemed stupid, and since when did he have to categorize shit like this anyway? - it wasn't like they were actually close, he headed to her room and knocked on the door.]

Natasha? It's B- [He cut himself off, because she never used his nickname and he didn't really get why, but. He didn't get a lot of stuff with Natasha.] It's James. You in there?

[Bucky is hanging out in his dorm room, which has a couple professional Quidditch team posters on the wall, plus at least one New York Yankees pennant since he's too young to like the Dodgers, and is sort of a typical level of messy for a teenage boy's dorm room. He's sitting at his desk tossing a baseball back and forth into a new mitt, trying to break it in.]

Alright, I've gotta couple questions. First, if anyone missed the notice, my brother's cat is missing, and if any of you assholes kidnapped her, we're gonna have a problem. Her name's Grace, she's black and has an orange collar. If anyone's seen her, let me know. [And god help you if you did take her because that cat is like Jeff's daughter and he will be pissed. :|]

Second, does anyone have a spare copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? I can't figure out what happened to my copy and we've got that paper next week. [Really he would not be shocked if it got eaten during class the other day, but whatever, it's a book.]

And if anyone's up for tossing a ball around, I wanna break in this glove by next week's game.

[ooc: Bucky is a senior in Cockrel, a Chaser on the Quidditch team and a shortstop on the baseball team. He's kind of one of the popular kids, but doesn't take crap from bullies and especially looks out for Steve and his twin brother, Jefferson, who is kind of a freak don't try to deny it. He's not the best student, but he shows up for class and does his work most of the time, he just likes sports better.]
